THE BUREAU DES LONGITUDES

The Bureau des longitudes is an academy responsible of the definition of the French National Ephemerides. The making of these ephemerides is entrusted to the Institut de mecanique celeste et de calcul des ephemerides, IMCCE, which has the form of an institute linked to Paris Observatory.

MISSIONS

Created by the law of the messidor 7, year 3 by the Convention Nationale, the Bureau des longitudes received various missions which changed during years and are currently described by the decree of January 30, 1970. The Bureau des longitude has the responsibility of the missions which it entrusts to the Institut de mecanique celeste et de calcul des éphémérides (IMCCE).

ACTIVITIES

The Bureau des longitudes meet once per month. It publishes the cahiers des sciences de l'univers and organizes scientific public open talks.

Since 1991, the Bureau des longitudes publishes "les cahiers des sciences de l'univers" which includes the following titles :

  • Stratosphère et couche d´ozone par G. Mégie (1992)
  • Chronique de l´espace-temps, du vide quantique à l´expansion cosmique par A. Mazure, G. Mathez, Y. Mellier (1994)
  • Les fondements de la mesure du temps par C. Audoin, B. Guinot.

The Bureau des longitudes has published during long years a directory with an encyclopaedic part; since 1977, the directory contained only annual astronomical data and the encyclopaedic part was published in the form of an encyclopeadia du Bureau des longitudes which includes the following titles :
  • La Terre, les eaux, l´atmosphère (1986)
  • Les étoiles. Le système solaire (1986, second publishing)
  • La Physique (1981)
  • La galaxie. L´univers extragalactique (1988, second publishing)

Conferences are proposed every first Tuesday of the month. They take place at the 23 quai Conti, Paris 6th, Hugo room and are public opened.

The academy of the Bureau meets once per month. Informations about the meetings are only available for the members of the Bureau des longitudes. Only past meetings reports are accessible to the historians.
