NASA Mission Successfully Flies by Comet Hartley 2
As expected, comet Hartley 2 was flown at nearly 700km by NASA's EPOXI spaceprobe Thursday, November 4, 2010. The first pictures are breathtaking as they reveal a surprising new world. The comet is like it was revealed the radar images taken by the Arecibo radio telescope in late October. It is indeed very long with two massive bulbs at its ends. Its central part is surprisingly smooth, free of roughness and of any relief. The cometary nucleus is the fifth to have been visited by a spacecraft.
